Cable One Arm Single Leg Calf Raise

The Cable One Arm Single Leg Calf Raise primarily works the Gastrocnemius (Medial), with secondary activation of the Soleus and stabilizer support from the External Obliques, Gluteus Medius, Gluteus Minimus, Levator Scapulae, Quadratus Lumborum, Trapezius (Middle), Trapezius (Upper). It is a cable isolation exercise at intermediate difficulty.

The Cable One Arm Single Leg Calf Raise is an intermediate isolation exercise performed with cable, following a isolation movement pattern. It primarily targets the Gastrocnemius (Medial), with secondary engagement of the Soleus. As a unilateral push, each side is trained independently for balanced development.

Primary Secondary Stabilizer

The Gastrocnemius (Medial) is the primary mover, taking on the bulk of the workload throughout the full range of motion. The Soleus assists as a secondary mover, contributing to force production without bearing the primary load. The External Obliques, Gluteus Medius, Gluteus Minimus, and 4 other muscles act as stabilizers, maintaining joint position and postural alignment throughout the movement.

How to Perform

Preparation

  1. Stand facing low pulley with platform on floor.
  2. Bend over and grasp stirrup attachment with one hand.
  3. Stand on edge of platform and grasp support bar for balance.
  4. Position toes and balls of feet on platform with arches and heels extending off.
  5. Lift one leg up off of floor.

Execution

  1. Raise heel by extending ankle as high as possible.
  2. Lower heel by bending ankle until calf is stretched.
  3. Repeat.

Comments

  1. Calf block or exercise step that will not overturn can be used as platform.
  2. Keep knee straight throughout exercise or bend knee slightly only during stretch.
  3. Quadriceps serve as synergist muscle if knees are bent slightly during stretch.
